Default : Collection Agency Subtle Scam?

What protection do we ( age XXXX ) have when a collection agency ( this XXXX in XXXX XXXX ) places us on 'default ' through their lawyers because they allegedly did not receive the check we sent?

Our records show we have been diligently paying for a medical bill ( incurred during an emergency ) with this collection agency, in spite of the fact that the hospital kept sending us " 0 '' Amount You Owe -- then popped this Collection Agency ( Please see attached document ).

Abruptly, half way sending our payments - during the tax refund season at that - we got a call a day after the 'default day ' that we are on default ; subtly informing us this would be forwarded to the credit bureau.

We are buying a house, about to make the walk-through next month ; you could imagine how conscientious we are on every step of the way regarding credit issues.

Can this collection agency simply claim, " Sorry, you defaulted, we did not receive the check ...? " We never lost any check we issued -- we make sure we mailed letters/checks directly with our post office.

I wonder, as a XXXX, how many defaults are incurred due to non-receipt of check payments by this particular XXXX XXXX collection agency, or possibly other collection agencies? Would you happen to have data on this concern?

In addition, is it the practice of collection agency NOT to send bill or payment confirmation? This collection agency said, " We do n't do that. " This is an alert I would like to share.
