Amex Complaint: Advertising and marketing

#1702672 16 Dec 2015

Credit card

Complaint #1702672 submitted on 12/16/2015 relating to Amex. Complaint relates to Credit card - Advertising and marketing .

Complaint was submitted via Web and sent to the company on Thursday 17th December 2015.

Narrative (may be redacted).

American Express Blue Cash Everyday marketed a 3 % cashback offer on US Supermarkets. I signed up for that here in XXXX, Hawaii. In getting my statement I noticed my Supermarket purchases were not accruing 3 % cashback. I called AmEx to ask why and have been told by multiple people in various customer service departments that their managers said our Hawaii supermarket is NOT a US Supermarket! I stated multiple times that Hawaii is the 50th State of the USA and therefore Hawaii markets are US businesses, but same response. I noted my AmEx statement itself describes the store as a " Grocery Store, '' but they insist it 's not a US Supermarket. AmEx should NOT be marketing to Hawaii businesses if AmEx will not recognize Hawaii as a State.
In addition, since I was signing up for the AmEx Blue card and their flyer said I could transfer a balance and pay it off interest free I did so. But only upon receiving this XXXX 2015 statement do I find they charged me a transfer fee. Their marketing stresses this free balance transfer option and does not clearly state they will apply a 3 % fee which fees misleading to me. And since the balance transfer only showed up on my XXXX 2015 statement I 'm being told it 's too late to cancel the transfer and they wo n't address the transfer fee. If they were clear about the 3 % fee I would n't have used them in the first place as my other cards offer me transfer checks I could use that do n't include a transfer fee and would n't charge me interest either for 18 months or so. If AmEx was clear in their marketing I would n't have used them for this transfer!
So I was enticed to move to AmEx for 3 % cash back at grocery stores only to find Hawaii does n't seem to count, and it 's now too late to address the balance transfer fee so AmEx gets to take over {$200.00} from me in transfer fees.
