My husband and I relocated to XXXX from XXXX in 2013. We lived in an apartment while we were house hunting. Our apartment lease was up in XXXX 2013 and we signed a home lease to begin XXXX 2013. We moved out of our apartment XX/XX/XXXX and returned our XXXX XXXX 'box ' to the local center. We both walked in and handed it to the XXXX XXXX employee. We asked if there was anything else we needed to do to cancel services, and he said, " Nope, you are good. '' We forwarded our address to our new home, and almost two years later, my husband received a call from a debt collector stating that we owed {$100.00} because the box was never returned ( we canceled our service and switched to XXXX when we moved ) -- and accused us of " stealing '' the box. He argued with the debt collector and insisted we had done this, but since the debt was so low, he agreed to pay the {$100.00} immediately because we are looking to buy a home and have been aggressively protecting our credit. We are now going through the loan process to buy a home, and our banker said that the XXXX XXXX credit hit knocked our score down XXXX points and we will not qualify for our home loan. Our banker has encouraged us to go back to XXXX XXXX and argue this " debt '' ( which we paid the first time we received a phone call ). After talking to XXXX customer service agents yesterday, they have " no record '' of our account and can not help us. It seems absurd to me that a company can literally ruin a family 's credit without any proof of our wrongdoing. Again, the " debt '' was {$100.00} and we would have paid six times that amount to keep our credit history in tact. Now, we are faced with not being able to buy a home for our family of XXXX. Please advise. This should be illegal!
